Day trips from London

I went for a last minute family getaway because there was a heatwave and when it comes to London you have to make the most of any hot days that you get so I booked in to a hotel in Surrey. Situated in such a beautiful, quiet nature spot only an hour away from London. With box hill right next door. The hotel has its own family friendly outdoor heated pool and a restaurant. We arrived on a nice hot summer's day and were greeted by staff. After dropping our bags off we headed straight to the pool which is situated on the beautiful grounds of the Mercure box hill hotel.

Off to the side are some woodlands and even rabbits on the grounds. I spent some time some bathing and the kids were straight into the pool where they spent the rest of the day. After a relaxing day by the pool, we went to our suite to get dressed for dinner which we enjoyed at the hotel restaurant.

We didn't even end up checking out box hill. As we would have had to make the ascent early on the morning of our scheduled check out - to avoid overexerting ourselves in the sweltering heat.

The hotel is even available for a day hire, so if there is a a another sudden heatwave you could enjoy a full day by the pool and have access to your own hotel room, plus visit box hill across the road and stop for some breakfast or dinner in the restaurant.

This was my fourth visit to the box hill area as my husband and I are always so impressed by box hill. Its proximity to London, ease of access and affordability by train. The first time I went I was with my husband and firstborn son. The second time I was actually pregnant with my second child and pass the halfway mark! Thinking back now. I can't believe I hiked up box hill during that time period, but I really enjoyed it and you have such a rewarding view when you look out over the Surrey downs. There's quite a lot of walking trails to enjoy. A cafe, so even box hill is a complete day trip for nature lovers. The second time we went to box hill was with a son who was only 3 years old at the time and impressively walked up the hill which is almost a mountain in size. Certainly a mountain to him at that age.
