The History and Evolution of Distilling in England
Distilling in England has a rich history that dates back to the medieval period. Initially, it was primarily used for medicinal purposes. Monks and alchemists experimented with various herbs and grains, creating spirituous concoctions that were believed to have healing properties.
By the 16th century, distillation gained popularity as a means of producing spirits for enjoyment rather than just medicine. The introduction of gin during this era transformed social drinking practices across the country. Gin became a staple in taverns, leading to both celebration and concern over public health.
The Industrial Revolution brought advancements in technology, refining distillation processes further. As demand grew, so did innovation within English distilleries.

My Personal Favourites
Silent Pool
As part of a getaway to the Surrey downs area of England. We trekked downhill to what felt like a hidden oasis - the silent Pool gin distillery which faces a natural pool in peaceful woodlands. The distillery is located in one of the places officially nominated as a outstanding area of natural beauty. Distillery tours take place and you can also take a seat to enjoy some gin along with something to eat. Click here to read about my visit to Silent Pool and the surrounding area.
Ramsbury
I've also worked closely with ramsbury - situated in Wiltshire, where they have an abundance of acres, but I first got to enjoy ramsbury gin and vodka at the Newbury show in September 2024. Ramsbury were the main sponsors of this incredible 2-day family fun, farming festival. Ramsbury really made the event what it was in my opinion. With a stylish bar set up. Free gin tastings. Venison burgers and chilli from deer grown on their own land.
Ramsbury also produce high quality merchandise, which was available to purchase - and to win! With giveaways and a gift shop on sale at the festival. I was literally one of the first to taste their brand new blackberry and wildflower honey gin - as it had just been released on the day of my visit! With their distillery about 20 minutes away from Newbury farm, it is well worth a visit for those in the area. See what's available at their official website: ramsbury.com
